 General Information

In the green of the Tuscan country, near to the beautiful towns of San Gimignano, Volterra, Colle di Val d'Elsa, Siena and Monteriggioni, there is Montegabbro, a rural village in which you breath Medieval air. At the ground floor of the main building of the village, which hosted a Benedectine Monastery, there's Casa Arianna, a lovely apartment recently restructured. We enter in Casa Arianna from a portico, which is in a beautiful court, probably the one of the Monastery. The wonderful living room, arched ceiling, has a kitchenette with fridge, oven, four-ring hob and dishwasher, the dining area seats six people. In the living room there is also a sofa bed for extra guests.

There are two bedrooms, one with a double bed, one with two single beds. The bathroom is good-sized and has a shower. Inside Casa Arianna there's also a particular and old well, traditionally used for the storing of olive oil or corn. In the Casa Arianna's portico you can relax, or eat or simply drink a marvellous home made wine offered by the owners.

San Gimignano, Volterra, Colle di Val d'Elsa, Siena and Monteriggioni are reachable in a few minutes by car; you can also visit a lot of villages or not very famous, but wonderful places on advice of the owners. Around Montegabbro is possible walking in the green; at about two kilometres there are some Etruscan tombs in a place named Dometaia.
A holiday in Montegabbro is ideal if you want relaxing in the Tuscan country.

Montegabbro was a little centre built around a Benedectine Monastery born in 12th century togheter to the little Church of San Giovanni (still existing), then it was transformed in a castle. Montegabbro belonged until 1219 to the Volterran Bishops, who have received it in 1186 from Arrigo the 2nd. Then it belonged to Colle Val d'Elsa, but in 1220 it retourned to Volterran Bishop with an act of Frederic the 2nd.

The Benedectine Monastery and the original town-walls are remained in a little part, but in the Church of San Giovanni, the Mass is celebrated in the first Sunday of May, when it's the Patron's Day. The big block of building outside the town-walls, in which is Casa Arianna, os probably of 1600, with a menor house in the fore side and a farm in the back side.

Montegabbro was a farm until the 1960-1970, when the agriculture was left. The family Bimbi is ever lived in Montegabbro; until the half of the last century all the village was property of them. The origin of the name Bimbi we suppose that comes from the Middle Age; when the foundlings who were entrusted to the nuns, were just called "bimbi" (children in Italian) which probably become their surname.
